Lesson 3 – First Open Chords

In this lesson you’ll learn your first open chords: E minor, A major and D major. These three shapes are a simple, comfortable starting point and appear in countless songs.

How to Use This Lesson

The video will show a chord diagram on screen, build the shape step by step, and then play a clear audio example of each chord. A brief hand shot gives you a rough visual reference, but you do not need to copy the hand exactly – what matters is that your version feels comfortable and sounds clean.

Use the Chord Library Diagram System

Whenever you want to see a chord more clearly, we encourage you to explore the chord library diagram system. Every chord from this lesson – E minor, A major and D major – is already laid out there with consistent diagrams that match what you see in the video.

You can find it here: Chord Library and, if needed, the Diagram Reference Guide.

Next Steps

Take your time with these three chords. Aim for a relaxed hand, clear notes, and smooth, unhurried changes between them. When you feel comfortable forming the shapes and hearing them ring clearly, move on to the next lesson and we’ll continue building on this foundation.
